WE ARE ACTIVITY FRIENDLY

High Farm, Beadlam Rigg is the ideal place to explore North Yorkshire and beyond being situated right at the gateway to the North York Moors National Park. We have some of the UK’s finest tourist destinations right on the doorstep, from idyllic countryside walks and cycle tracks to historic market towns and the beautiful Jurassic coastline.

We are located only 4.5 miles from Helmsley, which is a lovely market town, but once you are at the farm there is no passing traffic and the site is remote and peaceful. We are located in the North York Moors National Park and therefore there are plenty of off-road walking and cycling routes right from the farm entrance. Check out our interactive route map to start planning your adventure!

CYCLING FRIENDLY

The North York Moors National Park and surrounding area is one of the best places in the country to enjoy cycling of all types from gravel riding to mountain biking, from road cycling to cyclo-cross. With dedicated mountain biking centres and 2000kms of bridleways and quiet moorland roads you really are spoilt for choice.

At High Farm we offer secure enclosed storage for your bikes and equipment and also have a bike tool kit, puncture repair kit and bike stand available should you need to make any on site adjustments. Your adventure starts right from the gate with circular routes in both directions. Head north up the Rigg and there is a 4.5m route if you turn right at the top and a 5.5 mile route if you turn left at the top. For those of you who really want to make a day of it there is plenty more beyond this! To see these routes and more, as well as details of other cycling facilities in the area have a look at our interactive map.

For a day out cycling away from the farm, bike hire and dedicated cycle routes are available for all abilities from balance bike to expert routes at Sutton Bank and in Dalby Forest where bike shops are also located for any supplies you may need. Towards the coast you can hire a bike from Trailways at Hawsker Station and cycle the Cindertrack between Whitby and Robin Hoods Bay.

Checkout the North York Moors National Park’s Cycle Friendly webpage which offers details of Bike Hire, Cycling Centres, Repair stations and Food and Drink providers that wont frown upon you walking in on them in dirty cycling gear!

WALKING FRIENDLY

The North York Moors National Park and surrounding area is one of the best places in the country to enjoy walking of all types from gentle ambles to day loops and long distance multi day routes. At High Farm we are lucky enough to have many choices of routes right from the entrance gate.
A growing number of businesses in the National Park are signing up to the Walking Friendly initiative, making it easy for you to plan and make the most of your stay in the area. In fact you’ll probably need to stay for a week to get a good idea of what’s on offer! Check out the North York Moors National Park’s Walking Friendly webpage to plan your route:

The North York Moors National Park is a special place, we're sure we don't need to tell you that.
Please enjoy the countryside but leave it as you found it, for others to enjoy.

DARK SKIES FRIENDLY

The North York Moors National Park is a fantastic place to enjoy Dark Skies whether it’s at one of the Discovery Centres, at an organised event at a great venue or simply relaxing outside your accommodation with a deckchair, a warm blanket and some binoculars as our location has very little light pollution and a huge expanse of sky to enjoy. A guide to the night sky book and binoculars are available to help you to gain a greater understanding and really appreciate what you can see.

Check out the North York Moors National Park's Dark Skies page to get up to date information on up and coming events. The Dark Skies Festival which offers a number of activities within the National Park is held each year in February.

Three places in the locality in particular are recognised as special sites in the National Park. The two National Park Centres at Sutton Bank and Danby, plus Dalby Observatories in Dalby Forest have been named as Dark Sky Discovery Sites (Milky Way class) – so named because the galaxy is often visible to the naked eye from the sites, however I have spotted it on Beadlam Rigg too!

Dark Sky Discovery is an innovative network of national and local astronomy and open space organisations that helps people to enjoy the night sky.
Other places in the National Park are also recognised as great places, including Rievaulx Terrace where the National Trust sometimes hosts night walks and stargazing events plus Yorkshire Arboretum, in the neighbouring Howardian Hills AONB run a number of bat walks and stargazing events throughout the year. Find other great sites for stargazing and places hosting events in the area on the Go Stargazing website
